A roof replacement is noisy, busy work, but a little preparation makes the day smoother for you and for the crew. Here’s what we recommend doing in the days before the work starts.
Clear the way around the house
The crew needs room for ladders, materials and a dumpster or trailer for the old roofing. Move cars out of the driveway and garage the night before, and put patio furniture, grills, planters and children’s toys well away from the walls. Cut the lawn short a day or two ahead, so stray nails are easier to find during clean-up.
Protect what’s inside
Hammering on the roof sends vibrations through the house. Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves on the top floor, and put away fragile items that sit near outside walls. If you have an attic, cover stored belongings with old sheets or plastic, because dust and small bits of debris can fall through during tear-off.
- Move cars, outdoor furniture and grills away from the house
- Take down wall hangings on the top floor
- Cover belongings stored in the attic
Think about family and pets
Roofing is loud from start to finish. Pets are usually happier with a friend or in a quiet room away from the noise, and young children are safer away from the work area. If someone works from home or sleeps during the day, plan around the working hours.

Let the neighbors know
A quick word with your neighbors helps. Let them know when the work is planned, that there will be trucks and noise for a while and that the crew will keep the site tidy.
Plan for access and power
The crew may need an outdoor outlet for tools, and access to the attic if ventilation work is part of the job. Make sure gates are unlocked and side paths are clear. Once the roof is on, walk the property with the crew so you can ask questions and see the clean-up for yourself.
