THE ROOF SYSTEM

A new roof, from the deck up.

A new roof is more than its top layer. Here’s what goes into every Hunterdon installation, from the boards up to the ridge.

  • New rafters and roof sheathing

    Deck and underlayment

We make sure the deck is sound and flat, then lay underlayment over it, with ice and water barrier at eaves, valleys and every penetration before any roofing goes down.

    Shingles or metal

Choose GAF architectural shingles or standing-seam metal. We walk you through colors and profiles that suit an older farmhouse, a barn-style home or a newer build.

  • Cape Cod house with a new shingle roof

    Venting and flashing

Balanced intake and exhaust venting keeps the attic drier and cooler. New flashing at chimneys, walls and vents finishes the system so each joint sheds water.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

What matters for a Hunterdon roof.

Open land, old framing and long winters all shape which roof makes sense. These are the questions we look at with you.

  • Exposure to wind

Homes on open fields take more wind. Correct nailing, starter strips and ridge caps keep shingles down in strong gusts.

  • Snow on steep roofs

A roof that sheds snow, like standing-seam metal, can make sense on a steep farmhouse roof. We’ll explain the trade-offs.

  • Age of the framing

Older rafters and plank decking may need reinforcing or new sheathing before a new roof goes on. We check first.

Weighing metal against shingles? We’ll inspect the roof for free and price both, so you can compare them side by side.

ROOF INSTALLATION FAQS

Questions? Start here.

Deck preparation, underlayment, ice and water barrier at eaves and valleys, the roofing itself, new flashing, ventilation and ridge caps. Your written estimate lists each part so you can see exactly what you’re getting.

It can be. Metal sheds snow, suits the look of many farmhouses and lasts a long time when installed well. It costs more up front than shingles, so we price both and explain where each one makes sense.

Installed over a solid deck and underlayment, as we do, a metal roof is not much louder than shingles from inside the house. The loud metal roofs people remember are usually on open-framed barns and sheds.

We recommend a full tear-off. It lets us check the deck, replace damaged boards and install ice barrier and flashing properly. Covering old shingles hides problems and adds weight to older framing.

It depends on roof size, pitch, material, decking repairs and details like chimneys and skylights. Metal and shingle roofs are priced differently. After a free inspection you get a written estimate before anything starts.

As a GAF Certified contractor, we install GAF architectural shingles, with color and style options to suit the house. We’ll bring samples and explain the differences in look and wind performance.

Tell us about the driveway, gates, soft ground or overhead wires when you book. We plan where materials are delivered and where the dumpster sits, and protect lawns and drives during the work.

Yes. Our financing comes through a third-party lender and is subject to credit approval. Ask about it with your estimate. It can help if you’d prefer metal but want to spread the cost.
